Profile of Olaf Marzocchi

Olaf Marzocchi worked as PostDoc at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Karlsruhe, Germany) from June 2011 until April 2013. Main topic of the work was the further development of the measurement system developed during the PhD work.

Olaf Marzocchi in June 2011 completed his PhD work and received the title of Doctor Europaeus with a thesis titled "Design and Setup of a New HPGe Detector Based Body Counter Capable of Detecting Also Low Energy Photon Emitters". The work was performed as cooperation between University of Bologna (Italy) and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Karlsruhe, Germany). The thesis was supervised by Prof. Ing. Domiziano Mostacci and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Manfred Urban.
Topic of the thesis is the development of a new whole-/partial-body counter based on high-purity germanium detectors to detect low-energy emitters. In the first phase of the work, the detectors were characterised and modeled using a Monte Carlo software. These were then used to simulate partial-body configurations and to define the requirements for the supporting mechanics. The configuration for whole-body counting was defined later, while the mechanics was being designed and built. As last step, a software for the handling of the detectors and the calibration of the system was started. The system was used also to measure subjects residing in Japan during the Fukushima accident.
The PhD thesis was awarded on January 2012 as best PhD thesis in the field of radiation protection by the Deutsch Schweizerischer Fachverband für Strahlenschutz e.V. and represented Germany and Switzerland at the international competition sponsored by the International Radiation Protection Association (IRPA) and that took place on May 2012 at the IRPA13 congress. The work was awarded with the second prize.
The PhD thesis is available in PDF format (7.2 MiB) here or on the website AMS Tesi di dottorato of the University of Bologna. All the right are reserved and property of the author, Olaf Marzocchi; only the use for private purposes or didactic purposes is allowed.

Olaf Marzocchi received on the 19th March 2007 the master degree of Energy Engineering (Ingegneria Energetica) with full honors from the faculty of engineering of the University of Bologna, Bologna, Italy. The thesis title is "Automation of a Gamma Spectrometric Analysis Method for Naturally Occurring Radionuclides in Different Materials (NORM)".
The final work has been written during a six month period spent at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Karlsruhe, Germany) in the (former) HS-ÜM department, and is about the development, the implementation and the validation of a new software, able to speed up the analysis of the spectra of radioactive sources containing mostly natural radionuclides.
The work was supervised by Prof. Ing. Domiziano Mostacci, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Manfred Urban and Dipl.-Ing. Christoph Wilhelm.
The final work is available in PDF format (6.5 MiB, English language) here or at this address. All the right are reserved and property of the author, Olaf Marzocchi; only the use for private purposes or didactic purposes is allowed.

In December 2004 Olaf Marzocchi received the bachelor degree of Energy Engineering with full honors from the same Faculty of Engineering, University of Bologna, Bologna, Italy, with the work "Simulazione e analisi fisica del comportamento di sorgenti di plasma termico per il taglio di materiali metallici in differenti condizioni operative" ("Simulation and Physical Analysis of the Behaviour of Thermal Plasma Sources for the Cutting of Metallic Materials in Different Operating Conditions").
The project was centred on CFD simulations of the flux of gases in DC plasma torches, in collaboration with Cebora S.p.A (Cadriano di Granarolo, Bologna, Italy), along with the Research group on industrial applications of Plasmas of the former DIEM department.
Supervisor: Prof. Ing. Vittorio Colombo.
The final work is available in PDF format (23 MiB, Italian language) here. All the right are reserved and property of the author, Olaf Marzocchi; only the use for private purposes or didactic purposes is allowed.
